Four people were killed early Sunday morning after a pickup truck plunged off the Cicero Avenue bridge on Chicago’s Southwest Side following separate attempts by Chicago police and Illinois State Police to stop the vehicle. According to authorities, the incident began shortly after 2:15 a.m. when Chicago police responded to a report involving a person allegedly displaying a firearm from inside the pickup truck. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, prompting a brief pursuit that was quickly terminated.
A short time later, Illinois State Police located a vehicle matching the description and attempted another stop near 55th Street and Cicero Avenue. Although the driver initially pulled over, the pickup sped away as troopers began their investigation. The vehicle continued south at a high rate of speed before leaving the roadway, crashing off the Cicero Avenue bridge, and striking a train boxcar below. Three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth victim later died after being transported to the hospital. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
