Des Plaines: DUI Charge After Tollway Worker Killed on I-294

A DUI-related crash on Interstate 294 in Des Plaines left one tollway worker dead and two others injured early Saturday morning, according to Illinois State Police. The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I-294 near Devon Avenue while a maintenance crew was performing pothole repair work along the roadway.

Authorities said a vehicle entered the work zone and struck three tollway employees. Emergency responders transported all three workers to nearby hospitals for treatment. One of the workers, later identified as 52-year-old Calvin L. Holley of Chicago, succumbed to his injuries.

Following an investigation, state police arrested 37-year-old Paul R. Ong of Berwyn in connection with the crash. Prosecutors have charged Ong with one count of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Involving Death. He remains in custody awaiting his initial court appearance.

The fatal crash prompted condolences from Illinois officials, including Governor JB Pritzker, who described the incident as heartbreaking and recognized the dangers faced by roadway workers.
