A 21-year-old Illinois National Guard soldier from the Algonquin area died after a fiery crash in Bureau County over the weekend. According to the Illinois National Guard, Spc. Aiden Mrotek of Carpentersville was returning home Sunday night after helping with a National Guard community outreach initiative in Kewanee.
The Bureau County Sheriff’s Office said Mrotek’s vehicle struck a bridge guardrail west of Route 40 on 2000 North Avenue. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead.
Mrotek joined the Illinois Army National Guard’s 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry Regiment in Kewanee in May 2023. He later deployed to Djibouti, Africa, from September 2024 through September 2025 in support of U.S. military counter-terrorism operations.
Illinois National Guard officials described Mrotek as a dedicated and patriotic soldier who had already served overseas at a young age. During his military service, he received several awards and decorations, including the Army Achievement Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
