A Bartlett public works employee was killed Monday morning after a Metra MD-West train struck a small snowplow vehicle at a rail crossing, authorities confirmed. The collision occurred around 8:35 a.m. near the intersection of Oak Avenue and Railroad Avenue in Bartlett while the worker was clearing snow in the area. Police said the 64-year-old man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Metra reported that the Elgin-bound train hit a compact, golf cart–style vehicle equipped with a snowplow attachment. No passengers aboard the train were injured. As a result of the crash, inbound and outbound Metra District West service was temporarily halted, leading to extensive delays before trains gradually resumed movement around 9:30 a.m.
The Metra Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and federal transportation officials. Investigators are examining whether the worker may not have seen the approaching train while crossing the tracks. Witnesses described seeing the snowplow vehicle lodged at the front of the train, leaving nearby commuters shaken by the incident.
