Tragedy Strikes in Teutopolis, Illinois as a Semi Truck Carrying Anhydrous Ammonia Crashes, Leaving Five Dead. The devastating incident unfolded in Effingham County on Friday night. According to CBS News, The multi-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck transporting a significant quantity of anhydrous ammonia lead to a hazardous leak, causing hundreds to evacuate their homes.
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) revealed that the semi-truck was transporting approximately 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia when it became entangled in the multi-vehicle collision. Preliminary assessments indicate that roughly 4,000 gallons of anhydrous ammonia were discharged, and authorities have managed to partially contain the leak.
Tragically, five fatalities were reported as a result of the incident, while an additional six individuals were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. In response to the hazardous situation, a swift evacuation operation was initiated. Approximately 500 residents were evacuated from the affected area, spanning from Pearle Street in Teutopolis along Route 40 to 2100 North Road, extending north to I-70, and west to Pearle Street.
Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns commented on the grave situation, stating, “This accident caused a substantial release of anhydrous ammonia, resulting in highly dangerous air conditions. As a precaution, the northeast area of Teutopolis had to be evacuated for the safety of its residents.”
