A security guard was injured and transported to the hospital following a two-vehicle crash at a busy downtown Chicago intersection early Wednesday morning. According to Chicago police, the collision occurred around 3:31 a.m. near the intersection of State Street and Ida B. Wells Drive.
Authorities said a Ford sport-utility vehicle operated by a Chicago Transit Authority K-9 security unit was traveling northbound on State Street when it collided with a Cadillac SUV heading westbound on Ida B. Wells Drive. Preliminary reports indicate the Cadillac driver allegedly ran a red light before the crash occurred.
Following the impact, the Cadillac left the roadway and came to rest in a planter near the Harold Washington Library. Police reported that the driver of the Cadillac fled the scene on foot immediately after the collision and had not been located at the time of reporting.
The 33-year-old security guard driving the CTA security vehicle suffered injuries and was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was reported to be in fair condition. Officials did not immediately confirm whether a K-9 unit was inside the vehicle during the crash or whether any animal was injured.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to identify and locate the fleeing driver.
