An 18-year-old college baseball player died after being struck by a train in Wheaton, a Chicago suburb, on Sunday morning. The victim, Tomassino “Tommy” Offer, was walking along Main Street when the fatal incident occurred, according to Metra officials.

Witnesses told officials that Offer stopped at the tracks for a westbound Union Pacific freight train. After the train passed through the intersection, he began crossing the tracks and was struck by an eastbound freight train. The incident remained under investigation as of Tuesday, with officials stating that there was no information suggesting anything other than a tragic accident.

Offer was a freshman at Wheaton College and a member of the school’s Thunder baseball team. The team expressed its grief over the loss of their teammate, remembering him as a joyful, competitive, and caring person who built strong connections throughout the college community. Head coach Matt Husted also offered condolences to Offer’s family and friends.
