A man was killed after being struck by a speeding sport-utility vehicle in Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood late Sunday night. According to Chicago police, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 10:47 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Western Avenue. Investigators said the driver of a gray SUV was traveling southbound on Western Avenue at a high rate of speed when the vehicle struck a pedestrian. The victim suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the collision, the SUV crashed into a nearby light pole.
Shortly afterward, a blue car traveling westbound on 51st Street struck the fallen light pole, although that driver was not injured and declined medical treatment. The SUV driver was also unhurt. The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. As of Monday morning, no information regarding citations or criminal charges had been released.
