A driver was killed late Tuesday night after a high-speed car crash involving an empty school bus in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. Police said the crash happened around 10:55 p.m. in the 2700 block of West Augusta Boulevard, where a gray car traveling at a high rate of speed struck a parked, unoccupied school bus.
The force of the collision pushed the school bus into four other parked cars, all of which were unoccupied. The driver of the gray car was pronounced dead at the scene. Chicago police’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
A witness, Ginevra Francesconi, said she saw a car moving extremely fast along California Avenue before hearing a powerful screech followed by a loud boom. She compared the sound to what she imagined a bomb might sound like.
People nearby quickly rushed outside to help after the crash. Francesconi said the school bus had been pushed into another parked vehicle and several cars were badly damaged. She also reported that the vehicle involved in the crash and one of the parked cars caught fire.
