A 6-year-old girl was struck and killed by a school bus in Frankfort, Illinois, Tuesday shortly after she arrived home from school. Her mother said a different school bus driver was behind the wheel when the tragedy occurred.
The child, identified as Jenna Menias, was a first-grade student at Grand Prairie Elementary School. According to her mother, Jenna had just gotten off the bus near the family’s home in the Prestwick neighborhood when she was hit by the same bus.
The crash happened in the 500 block of Aberdeen Road near Harlem Road. Witnesses immediately performed CPR on Jenna before first responders arrived. She was taken to a hospital but later died from her injuries.
Jenna’s family and neighbors described her as a smart, loving child who enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Her mother also said Jenna had a close relationship with her three older siblings.
School district officials said crisis counseling and support services are available to students, staff and others affected by the tragedy. Frankfort officials said a community vigil is planned for Friday night at Breidert Green.
The school district and Lincoln-Way Transportation are cooperating with Frankfort police and the Will County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation continues. No charges had been announced as of Wednesday.
